Volcano Climbing

Misti Volcano

The Misti Volcano is majestic and enticing with its perfectly symmetrical cone shape and large crater visible from the city center on a clear day. It is situated between the Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanos and is considered active dormant with its last documented eruption in the 1880s. Climbing up Misti's steep, shale slopes is an exciting challenge that brings you to the best eagle-eye view of the Arequipa region.

Day 0:   The evening before the tour we highly recommend attending a breifing/orientation at a gear house located a couple blocks from the main plaza. You will have the chance to try on gear, rent gear if necessary, and ask any unanswered questions.

Day 1:  At 8AM we will pick you up from your hotel in a private 4x4 car and we will drive approximately 2 hours Northeast to the Misti Volcano trailhead. We begin climbing at approximately 3400 meters and will climb 5-6 hours to the basecamp situated at 4500 meters. Upon arriving to the basecamp in the early afternoon, the guides will setup camp and prepare dinner. After eating an early dinner and watching the sunset over looking Arequipa, everyone will retreat to their tents to sleep.

Day 2:    Wake up call will be between 2 and 3 AM. After eating a simple breakfast, we will begin the 5-6 hour climb to the crater of the volcano situated at 5825 meters. You will have approximately 45 minutes to rest and enjoy the breathtaking view, before we make our way down to the trailhead. We will arive to the trailhead by midday and drive the two hours back to Arequipa arriving between 2-3pm.

Chachani Volcano

The Chachani Volcano is the tallest of the three volcanos surrounding the city of Arequipa, with its highest point situated at 6075 meters. It offers a killer birds eye view of the Misti Volcani and the Arequipa region. Although Chachani is higher in elevation, there is only one long day of climbing (~1000 meters) in contrast two the two  days of ~1000 meter climbs to reach Misti's crater.
